As noted in articles posted here earlier today, big media is trying to control what we do in the Presidential election, by suppressing the news:
The Washington Times Exposes How Big Media Hid News of Bush’s Recent Success in Italy
I have had it with big media’s attempts to control us. And so have a lot of people. From a Pew Research poll:

Only 35% of Democrats believe all or most of what they hear on ABC News. That’s all—just 35%. And only 17% of Republicans do. All the broadcast networks show similar or even lower numbers.
Only 31% of Democrats, and 14% of Republicans, believe all or most of what they read in the NY TIMES.
That’s a discredited media.
Notice that the percentage of people who do believe most or all of it, has been dropping like a rock since 2000. And what happened between 2000 and 2004? Oh yes… that’s right… 9-11. This is wartime, and we the people naturally want a media that supports us and wants us to succeed.
Big Media, wake up and smell the coffee: you’ve been discredited. The vast majority of people don’t believe what you’re saying.
HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
Before Watergate, media in the U.S.A. had a tradition of saying to America, “Go Team!”, of cheering for our success, celebrating our victories, and sadly regretting our losses.
After Watergate, big media devoted itself to attacking America. They slam every President, and everything America does. They hide our successes and our victories on back pages and often even fail to report on them at all.
But they made a mistake. America is made up of real people, called Americans. After decades of being slammed and berated by big media, these Americans have realized that big media is no longer on their side and that they’re going to have to look elsewhere to find out what’s really going on in the world.
As evidenced by the recent financial troubles at the LA TIMES, by attacking its own customers, big media is behaving in a suicidal manner.
...reported levels of regular newspaper reading and viewing of network evening news broadcasts have not recovered from their decade-long slump, though they have not declined further.
They’re discredited and have lost customers and money.
AND HERE’S HOW TO FIX IT
Addressing my comments to big media:
Stop suppressing the news. Your job is not to rule us, but to report to us.
“To report to us” in both senses—not only in bringing us the news, but also in the sense of being, like the President, the subordinate of the people.
A media that shows love and support for Americans, will thrive in finding that Americans show love and support back.

Update 6-16-04. Welcome, Carnival of the Vanities readers! This article was honored to be included in the latest Carnival of the Vanities, hosted this week by Jessica’s Well.
Who knew? The American public has been kept in the dark yet again by big media that wants to control what we do in the Presidential election. The details:
President Bush had a successful trip to Italy earlier this month, but no one in America would know it based on the news coverage.
...John Paul II even applauded the “encouraging steps” underway in the governmental organization and reconstruction of Iraq. After the president presented the pope with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian award, John Paul II exclaimed, “God bless America.”
The media ignored developments that could have an impact on this year’s presidential election. For example, the pope strongly endorsed Mr. Bush’s “commitment to the promotion of moral values in American society, particularly with regard to respect for life and the family.” This is important given that abortion and same-sex marriage are issues in the 2004 campaign. John Paul II’s praise is relevant because John Kerry, a Catholic, is opposed to the church’s positions against abortion and same-sex marriage.
...Mr. Bush’s state visit with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi similarly was misreported. ...After Mr. Bush detailed Mr. Berlusconi’s leadership and commitment to the Iraq mission, the prime minister’s poll numbers improved. This is an impressive sign of the president’s prestige. It is not a surprise that the U.S. media failed to report it.
This is the second of three posts today on big media.
Here were the above-the-fold LA TIMES headlines yesterday:
THE CONFLICT IN IRAQ
Alcohol Cited as Problem at Prison
Officials at Abu Ghraib tried to rein in the illicit behavior before abuse of inmates surfaced.
THE RACE TO THE WHITE HOUSE
Sunday Division Has a New Equation
Regular churchgoers tend to lean Republican, while the more secular vote Democratic. But the Iraq war is making some of the faithful uneasy.
THE RACE TO THE WHITE HOUSE
Retired Officials Say Bush Must Go
The 26 ex-diplomats and military leaders say his foreign policy has harmed national security. Several served under Republicans.
Not too subtle, is it? Three articles, the only ones above the fold on the front page of the Sunday paper, all slamming Bush. Not one article favorable to Bush was found anywhere on the front page.
Regarding the 3rd headline quoted above, Patterico exposes the bias of the LA TIMES still further:
The Dog Trainer’s prominent and sympathetic treatment of this letter stands in marked contrast to its coverage of a letter that was released in May by hundreds of former military men, many of whom served with John Kerry, questioning Kerry’s honesty and fitness to serve as Commander-in-Chief. The letter, which was signed by every officer in Kerry’s chain of command in Vietnam, was buried by the Dog Trainer in stories appearing on pages A21 and A20.
The LA TIMES isn’t a newspaper—it’s an experiment in mind control.
