Once again via Sal, who always finds great stuff:
As I was driving over to Level One restaurant to see the debate, I was as nervous as if I was going to have to debate someone myself. We Conservatives haven’t been too happy since the first Presidential debate.
Crowd Gathered for the Debate at Level One Restaurant
A large viewing party had been organized by Kate Wright. The crowd was primarily staunch Conservatives. We thought Bush knocked it out of the park. He didn’t do any of the things that got him in trouble last time—making faces, repeating himself, etc. And he made some great points. He repeatedly pointed out votes Kerry had missed, and votes he had cast that didn’t fit with his current positions. He was well-rested and really seemed to enjoy talking to the crowd. And he seemed to be doing a far better job than Kerry of thinking on his feet. Bush’s line, “You can run but you can’t hide,” seemed off the cuff. And several times Kerry seemed to be stumbling over his words.
But I didn’t believe it until I got back home and could check the Net and see what consensus was among, well, everybody else. I was very concerned that somehow, some way, people might be calling this one for Kerry.
It didn’t happen. I checked link roundups on Instapundit, Allahpundit, and Polipundit.—sites that called the last debate for Kerry.
Instapundit calls it a win for Bush. AllahPundit says:
A consensus seems to be building around the idea that both men did well but Bush did just a bit better.
What I really liked was these assessments from PoliPundit:
When ultra-liberal kool-aid drinker Josh Marshall calls the debate a draw, you can bet that Bush whupped Kerry big time.
[.....]
Heres ultra, ultra-left kool-aid drinker Kos on the debate:
Well, the consensus seems to be that since Bush wasnt as horrible as last time, then he won or battled to a draw. Bizarre.
Translation: Bush won big time!
[.....]
When Andrew Sullivan calls the debate a draw, you can bet that Bush whupped Kerry big time.
So I guess that’s it. This appears to have been a major Bush victory.
Elliot McGucken of JollyRoger.com, Left, and Journalist Andrew Leigh
A great thing about the recent Liberty Film Festival is that it provided a chance for a lot of Conservatives to meet each other. We’ve continued to stay in touch after the conclusion of that event. Above is Elliot McGucken, who runs JollyRoger.com and other sites that collectively get 500,000 visits a month. He’s talking to journalist Andrew Leigh, at the restaurant after the debate. We all met at the Festival.
