Newt on Social Security Reform:
If the President and Republicans in Congress are going to be successful on Social Security reform, they need to advance legislation that focuses on personal retirement accounts, without tax increases or benefit cuts.
The problem with the message coming from Washington is that all the proposed “solutions” to fix Social Security solve Washington’s problems not the workers’. The focus needs to be on solving the workers’ problem, which is that Social Security pays too little, not too much.
Tensions between India and Pakistan appear to be easing.
Spammer Gets Sentenced to 9 Years in the Slammer—Sent out 10 Million E-Mails a Day:
LEESBURG, Va.—A Virginia judge sentenced a spammer to nine years in prison Friday…
...A jury had recommended the nine-year prison term after convicting Jeremy Jaynes of pumping out at least 10 million e-mails a day with the help of 16 high-speed lines, the kind of Internet capacity a 1,000-employee company would need.
His lawyers will appeal.
If he were just sentenced to have to remove 10 million emails a day from his home computer it would be pretty much the same sentence.
The robots are designed to strengthen surveillance, ministry spokesman Shin Hyun-don told reporters.
...Hundreds of thousands of troops patrol the frontier, which has been closed since the Korean War ended in 1953.
The defence ministry said on Friday that it would complete a feasibility study of the planned system by the end of 2005, and the robots could be in operation as early as 2011.
Operating system by… Microsoft? Let’s give Microsoft a robot army with guns and live ammo.
Or even if Microsoft is left out of it… let’s just have a bunch of robots with guns walking around. Surely no hacker would ever be able to hack those systems.
Oh man. Paging Tom Clancy. Paging James Cameron. Paging Steven Spielberg.
BTW, if you want to see an excellent movie set on the border between North and South Korea, consider Joint Security Area. It’s a mystery with some action, powered by a great script.
Undocumented Border Patrol Agent:
“I can see eight to 10 of them out there, and if it wasn’t for us here they’d come right on through,” said Montrose, who wore a magnum pistol strapped to his hip in a leather holster. “This border is just wide open.”
...Many cite a recent CIA warning that al Qaeda militants could be preparing to cross from Mexico to carry out attacks in the United States, and say they see the fence as a threat to the security of “heartland America.”
...”It’s a combination of hot issues that is getting a lot of Americans up out of their armchairs and out on to the streets,” [Minuteman Robin Hvidston] said, wearing a button declaring her to be an “Undocumented Border Patrol Agent.”
Half a million years ago, there were mammoths stomping around right here:
MOORPARK, California – The remarkably well-preserved remnants of an estimated half-million-year-old mammoth – including both tusks – were discovered at a new housing development in Southern California.
