Impressive: Wal-Mart to Open Stores in Struggling Urban Neighborhoods.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, said Tuesday it plans to build more than 50 stores in struggling communities over the next two years, as part of a goal to create between 15,000 and 25,000 jobs.
Wal-Mart said it will build the stores in neighborhoods with high crime or unemployment rates, on sites that are environmentally contaminated, or in vacant buildings or malls in need of revitalization.
The Bentonville, Ark., company said it expects many of the jobs will be in minority communities and could generate more than $100 million in state and local tax revenue. It already has over 1.3 million U.S. employees.
For a company to purposely build megastores in neighborhoods with high crime, or in need of revitalization, etc., takes a lot of vision and courage. Contrast this with Border Books' cries of fear to justify its refusal to stock a little magazine that shows the Mohammed cartoons. Wal-Mart is taking steps to make America stronger. I live in California, and I've seen how commercial development of the Third Street Promenade changed it from being like a street in a ghost town, to a thriving commercial district that has been widely emulated since then in locations such as Universal Citywalk and at the Grove. I expect Wal-Mart to do more to build those communities, than most government programs.
Saddam Hussein Charged With Additional Crimes
BAGHDAD, Iraq Apr 4, 2006 (AP)— The Iraq tribunal announced new criminal charges against Saddam Hussein and six others Tuesday, accusing them of genocide and crimes against humanity stemming from a 1980s crackdown against Kurds that included the gassing of thousands of civilians.
The move, tantamount to an indictment under the Iraqi legal system, paves the way for a second trial of the ousted ruler. Saddam already is being tried in the killings of more than 140 Shiites in a town north of Baghdad.
Under Iraqi law, the second trial could begin in at least 45 days.
This may show Saddam that his grandstanding attempt to make a meaningless circus out of his trial, will not protect him from justice.
