HITLER’S NURSE TALKS ABOUT THE LAST DAYS OF THE THIRD REICH. What’s amazing is how much death and madness were there—and how much this nurse seems to have found all of that quite normal.
About Hitler: “His authority was extraordinary. He was always polite and charming. There was really nothing to object to.”
With the Russians nearing the capital: “The circle got increasingly small. People were pushed together. Everyone became more unassuming.” She noted that the staff in the bunker began living “outside reality.”
On her efforts to save the children of Joseph and Magda Goebbels, who killed their children with poisoning before taking their own lives: “She was a brilliant woman, on a far higher level than most people. I wanted her to take at least one or two of them out of the city. But Mrs Goebbels simply said, ‘I belong to my husband. And the children belong to me.’”
...The paper noted that Hitler’s decision to marry Braun made it “immediately clear to me that this signified the end of the Third Reich”, she added, claiming that the death of Hitler’s wolfhound Blondi “affected us more” than Braun’s suicide.
It seems to me that that’s the effect that the evil the Third Reich did, had on them: it made them crazy and suicidal.
Welcome, Ed. It's great to see you here. Thanks for the link to your excellent review of Downfall. By the way, I really enjoyed this post on your site yesterday.
Goebbels of living "outside" of reality, is when a person is traumatized beyond means. She had to have been so against his control and tried so hard to get out of his authority. Very very down, and sad. (indeed)
One can only think how much we can have a country whole again.
No rights moved away. But now we've ruined it by standing by and watching all this happen. We didn't stop it until all those millions of poor people were dead and gone. Now it's different. Technology hastens the spur of the moment chances of a leader having that much control.
Shame on everyone if this ever ever happens again.
And while this technology is rolling along ....another time and place of genocide is taking place. just watch, you'll see after it's over.
Pray now it isn't going to get as far, or even one dies this way.
Vik,
The article you link to about Hitler's nurse mentions the recent German film Downfall. Here's a link to my review of it. The film really does a superb job of capturing the atmosphere in Hitler's bunker of "death and madness" as you put it, including Magda Goebbels' poisoning of her own children and Hitler testing cyanide on his dog, Blondi.
