Iraqi-American Fawaz Saraf emails:
Hizbollah's defeat
During the first gulf war many Iraqis, distraught by the sight of destruction of their country by American and British bombs, often comforted themselves by the thought that at end of all this destruction, there will be no Saddam. Over the past few days, I have spoken to many Lebanese Americans who seem to echo these same sentiments, except of course they hoping that after all this destruction to their beautiful country, Hizbollah would be disarmed. At the end of the first gulf war Iraqis were horrified to find that after all this destruction, after all this chemotherapy, after all this radiation, their cancer was left in place, left to torment them for many more years. The tragedy for Lebanon would be if after all this destruction, an armed and dangerous Hizbollah is allowed to remain in place. The only acceptable outcome for this current conflict should be a total and absolute defeat of Hizballah. Anything less would leave a deadly organization and with an equally deadly and medieval philosophy (that of Islamic fundamentalism) in place to fight another day (and perhaps with deadlier weapons).
Angry at Israel's actions in Lebanon, a European political leader declared that peace cannot be made with dead children. Aaagh, the condescending nonsense we must tolerate from our European friends (Those same European friends who take the high moral ground of vacationing in Cuba because it is cheap, thanks to Castro's abuse of his population, and where recently frustrated Cubans threw rocks at a hospital being constructed by the Cuban government and dedicated for European patients only). Does this delusional European really think that if Israel declares a ceasefire now, the children of the Middle East will live happily ever after?
I always wonder at how many tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi lives could have been saved over the past three years had the coalition forces been more forceful in dealing with the Iraqi insurgency, including Moqtada Sadr's Mahdi army. Oh, I am sure we would have been lectured by Europeans, but perhaps Iraq would have been a safer place today.
Dear Mr. Saraf,
Iraqi American, huh?
First, you need to be thanked on behalf of all Iraqis who were killed, raped, maimed, tortured and abused by the likes of you and other Chalabis. Second, American families whose sons and daughters have been killed in Iraq also thank you for the good your "philosophy" has done them (they probably all regret that the European view had not prevailed then).
Same logic applies to the hyphenated Lebanese. The only real credible views are those of the Iraqi and Lebanese citizens, whose lives are affected precisely because they did not choose to flee West, and do not hold the privilege of discussing theoretical possibilties on the internet.
Do not worry. It is likely that Europeans do not consider you or those who hold your views as "friends". They see a deeply ignorant, logically (and perhaps emotionally troubled by self hatred) challenged bunch with no knowledge, appreciation and respect for human life and ultimately diplomacy (which is unique to humans and not found amongst animal species). Some would argue that force alone is not effective and in this case very destructive. Change your cable channel occasionally to watch news coverage from the middle east and the actual response to the Israeli bombing. You would be surprised to see Hezbollah flags waved in Malaysia and in Iraq. Thus, if the aim of this attack is to destroy Hezbollah, then the current facts suggest the approach to be countereffective.
Please attribute your quote to the European diplomat, whoever this may be. Incidentally, American and Canadian tourists make up the bulk of visitors to Cuba - also check your facts, so you can be taken seriously and not laughed at.
Incidently as I write this, Israel appears to have bombed a residential area in Beirut which is predominantly Christian Lebanese. It maybe that you lack sufficient knowledge, and should restrict your haste in judging this as an act aimed at "hezbollah's defeat".
