Here's the little tiny difficulty the Dems have. Let's take Iraq, for example. Everybody knows that if they pull our troops out at this point, there will be a bloodbath, with hundreds of thousands killed; and the place will become a nation in the hands of terrorists like Al Qaeda who will use it to stage attacks on Americans. The Dems would be blamed.
Or take the Patriot Act. Let's say the Dems gut the Patriot Act, and the result is a massive killing of Americans, that could have been avoided via wiretapping Al Qaeda members, or via cooperation between the FBI and CIA. The Dems would be blamed. Their time as the majority party in Congress would be over as swiftly as it began.
Or let's take taxes. Say the Dems raise taxes, and the economy - which is currently blazing ahead, with low unemployment, rising wages, and a record-high stock market - goes into a recession. It will make it far more difficult for the Dems to take the White House.
For the Dems, proposing these irresponsible actions has made for good shocking campaign rhetoric. But they may find that actually carrying them out, is another question entirely.
Make no mistake here, it is the Iraqis themselves who are responsible for the sectarian genocide and the inability of the decent Iraqis to band together and counter this. The US gave Iraq a window of opportunity to become a civilized, peaceful, and democractic nation (which most Iraqis support), but it has been shattered by a handful of terrorists and extremists who are fueled by hate and lust for power.
Believe it or not, I look forward to the trials the Democrats face with them in control. Now everyone will see that staying on the Republican set course is still the best option we have. Republicans will be BEGGED to retake the majority once the Democrats destroy the little stability we have in Iraq with their idealistic false promises. Ah...it feels good to be on the side playing watch-dog. Can't wait to see everyone crawling back to the conservative and Republican state of mind ^_^
Trouble in Paradise?
The Democrats soundly defeated Madame Speaker-elect Pelosi's choice for House Majoriy Leader serving her notice that the more conservative and moderate (sane) elements in the party will still be a considerable force.
According to and article in today's New York Times , Rep. Steny Hoyer (MD) defeated Rep. John. Murtha (PA) by a decisive vote of 149 to 86.
But it is obvious that there is a strong undercurrent of distrust amongst Democrats as evidenced by the NYT's article and remark of my own Representative:
Not everyone was willing to put aside the fight so quickly. Some supporters of Mr. Murtha, a longtime member of the Appropriations Committee whose candidacy was dogged by questions about his ethics record, were disgruntled and said they were trying to identify lawmakers who had broken pledges to support him.
“We won’t trust them on issues like this the next time,” said Representative James P. Moran, a Murtha ally from Virginia who said Mr. Murtha had been betrayed.
And then there is the possibility of catfights between Rep. Pelosi and Rep. Jane Harmon (CA) as evidenced by this:
Ms. Pelosi’s party problems are not all behind her, as she faces a tough decision on selecting a chairman of the Intelligence Committee.
On the one hand, she is under pressure from black lawmakers to promote a committee veteran, Alcee L. Hastings of Florida, a federal judge who was removed from the bench by Congress after a bribery charge in 1989, though he was acquitted in a criminal case.
At the same time, some more conservative Democrats who supported Mr. Hoyer have been stepping up their campaign for Representative Jane Harman of California, who is the senior Democrat on the panel but has clashed with Ms. Pelosi.
This is not a united party with a single focus. It is fractious and clearly divided and will be unable to deliver their outlandish campaign promises and agenda. The Democratic National Committee Spin Doctors will be working overtime for the next two years!
Unfortunately Rep. Murtha intended to “go back to my small subcommittee that I have on appropriations,” eliciting laughter since the panel handles billions of dollars in military spending.
Now that's the real tragedy.
What a surprise. The Democrats no longer wish to be the facilitators of Iraqi sectarian genocide. The Kos crowd is going to go apoplectic.
