In one of the biggest developments of the year in the war on terror, the freeze on financial aid to Hamastan has been holding, and is proving to be effective. Many thought Europe would cave and resume financial support to the terrorist government. But Europe and the U.S. have held firm that Hamastan must recognize the right of Israel to exist.
Hamas PM ready to step down to end aid freeze
GAZA CITY (AFP) - The Islamist head of the Palestinian government Ismail Haniya said that he was ready to step down from the premiership to end a crippling Western aid freeze.
Haniya said he did not believe that Western donors would accept any administration he headed, even if his Hamas group was joined in government by the Fatah faction of moderate Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas.
"The United States, the Europeans and others in the region have said that an agreement is a good thing but that they will not lift the siege without replacing prime minister Haniya," he said referring to himself in the third person.
"If we have to choose between the siege and myself, we must lift the siege and end the suffering," he said in a prayer sermon in a Gaza mosque.
...Prime Minister Tony Blair said last week that Britain was "prepared to talk" to a unity government even if Hamas took part, provided it agreed to renounce violence, and recognize Israel and past peace deals.
Last February I posted that I expected the free world to keep up the financial pressure on Hamastan:
There can be little doubt that a turning point in the war on Islamofascism is taking place this week. For the first time, Hamastan is at the mercy of the free world, depending for financing on the free world it seeks to destroy, and very specifically, depending on Israel. Israel collects monthly customer revenue and gives it to what may now be called Hamastan, on condition that the Palestinians abide by specific agreements-agreements which Hamastan has now abrogated…
...It is not human nature to let up on someone who's trying to kill you when you have the upper hand. I do not expect the free world to let up on Hamastan now that the terrorists of Hamas are in need of our financial help.
As I noted in a follow-up post last month, Daniel Pipes has stated that if Hamastan recognizes Israel, the rest of the Arab world may as well:
Israel needs only to defeat the Palestinian Arabs, not the whole Arab or Muslim populations, who eventually will follow the Palestinian Arab lead.
The free world has shown that it can pressure Hamastan to toe the line. It appears likely that Hamastan will have to abandon its official policy of wanting to destroy Israel.
The free world must now keep up the pressure and force Hamastan to prove that they mean it and aren't merely giving lip service. Hamastan must be made to prove it recognizes Israel's right to exist. Financial aid must be resumed only when Hamastan recognizes Israel's right to exist, and then only very slowly, and must be shut off at a moment's notice at the first sign of a bombing of a bus, restaurant, rocketing of a civilian area, etc.
The free world must not lose this chance to force the Hamas and Fatah terrorists to stop targeting civilians.
