Commenter A.M. Whittaker posts:
From the Embassy of Germany website:
Foreign Minister Steinmeier Cancels Trip to Syria
“Today’s speech by Syrian President Assad is a negative contribution that in no way does justice to the current challenges and opportunities in the Middle East. With positive and constructive action, Syria can restore the lost trust of the international community and represent its legitimate interests on this basis. However, a clear and unambiguous commitment to the settlement of regional interest disputes through peaceful means is indispensable as a basic prerequisite for this. Today’s speech by President Assad goes in the opposite direction. Therefore, I have decided not to travel to Damascus now.”

BRAVO!
Someone in the international community has shown some discernment!
Great post, A.M.! I've just quoted it in a new article.
Well, now they understand!
This article is from today's (22Aug 2006) New York Times and concerns the recent bomb plot in Germany:
“People thought for the longest time that Germany would be safe because we didn’t send troops to Iraq,” said Johannes Schmalz, the president of the agency for the protection of the constitution — a rough equivalent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation — in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg.
“This presumption is wrong,” he said. “The enemy of violent Islamists is the Western world as a whole.”
