I’m glad to see that the memogate Report cites “countless misstatements and omissions in the reporting:”
...basic journalistic steps were not carried out in a manner consistent with accurate and fair reporting, leading to countless misstatements and omissions in the reporting by 60 Minutes Wednesday and CBS News. (Page 29)
First among the recommendations of the report is to create a Standards and Practices executive who “must” be consulted prior to nearly every story, who will review the story to make sure the reporters have done their jobs correctly:
Create a new senior Standards and Practices position (Standards Executive), outside of the production structure of 60 Minutes Wednesday and reporting directly to the President of CBS News, whose mission would be as follows. Before airing any 60 Minutes Wednesday segment that involves investigative reporting, confidential sources or the authentication and/or chain of custody of materials received from outside sources, the Standards Executive must be consulted and must review whether proper processes have been followed. ... The Standards Executive should have the authority to delay or veto the segment. (Page 29)
This strikes me as poor management. It seems to me to institutionalize suspicion of the reporters. And it puts another layer of management in between the reporters and getting a story on the air, which would slow them down.
This appears to me to be an example of the Liberal obsession with trying to use rules, regulations, laws and oversight to order people to behave correctly, instead of asking people to behave well on their own.
