Here's what I found most alarming about this week's Pew Poll. You may have already heard about it - it's the one that says:
About a quarter (26%) of younger U.S. Muslims say suicide bombing can at least rarely be justified, 17 percentage points higher than the proportion of Muslims ages 30 and older (9%) who share that view.
"17 percentage points higher than" in this case could also be expressed as "almost three times as likely as."
Let's repeat: younger Muslims are almost three times as likely as older Muslims to say that suicide bombing can at least rarely be justified.
They're also almost twice as likely (7% vs. 4%) to have a favorable view of Al Qaeda - yes, Al Qaeda, the group that killed 3,000 Americans on 9-11.
This is the same pattern we see in Europe - where older Muslims appear to assimilate - but their children become radical. For example, here's a finding from a British poll from January of 2007:
36% of 16 to 24-year-olds believe if a Muslim converts to another religion they should be punished by death, compared with 19% of over-55s.
This prompted Ros Atkins at BBC News to ask:

What's radicalizing younger Muslims? It appears likely that it is the Koran. It doesn't matter how assimilated the parents are. If they tell their children that the Koran is the word of Allah, the children are going to read it and find out that according to the Koran, Allah says they're supposed to fight and kill non-Muslims until the whole world is Islamic. This brings to mind something said by Muslim Wafa Sultan, named in 2006 as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine:
Dr. Wafa Sultan: I have lost hope for Islam and I think it is the duty of all free speakers to help in the effort to enlighten the Muslims.
...Islam should not be considered a religion, but a political ideology that applies its policy violently.
...Sometimes when I talk to American friends, I get so upset that they don't know anything. A friend [...] said, Islam is a religion of peace. The President of the United States said, Islam is a religion of peace. Do you read anything about Islam? Do you know anything about Islam? When I heard that I just wanted to close my eyes.
...Islam shouldn't be classified as a religion because as a Muslim you have to believe in Islam as a religion and as a state.
...As long as you are allowing the Koran to be read in your schools, you are in grave danger.
The results of the Pew Poll appear to indicate that Dr. Sultan is correct about this.

#2the koran should not be allowed in any united states school. any school that teaches from this book should be disqualified from any credits toward formal education. it is a blueprint for murder and other vile crimes against mankind.it should be declared a terrorist tool and should be banned in the west. islam is being forced down our throats by whining malcontents. muslim and non-muslim. their jihad will only end when it is stopped. a formal declaration of war on islam and sharia law is the best solution to the problem. america has always rolled with the punches. we can do this constitutionally. there are laws covering these situations in matters of national security. let's get this fight out in the open and watch those bastards run.

That point of view has little relevance in a world where mobs of radical Islamists call for the death of a teacher who named a teddy bear Mohammed, and who blow up planes, trains, busses and restaurants, all in the name of Islam, while there is no comparable behavior from mobs of Christians.

There are no radical "Christian" groups such as "The Lambs of Christ" who blow up things such as oh say - abortion clinics, and committ murder of innocents (not everybody who gets blown up are abortionists all the time PLUS whatever happened to "Judge not! Lest ye be judged!" and "Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone!"??
Nope, there are "no comparable behaviors" from mobs of Christians.
There are no "Christians" who belong to radical "God hates Fags!" churches. And say things like "Thank God for dead US soldiers!" and harass the poor innocent families and friends of military veterans who died at their own funerals.
There is nothing comparable in the Christian world and Christians have never committed horrible atrocities throughout history, started wars and causes innumerable deaths around the world.
Bah! All religions are a cult and are not logical. They are perverse and operate on emotion and old musty books and wishful thinking.
Religions cause more harm than good IMHO. And to hell with all of them - literally!
At this particular point in time Islam is more violent. At other times in history however it was the Christians doing the torturing, slaughtering and butchering.
One must look at the whole picture, not just one particular slice in time.
Religion truly is the opiate of the people and I certainly ain't no communist but...

ALL religion sucks. But I respect peaceful non-violent ones, truly non-violent ones like Buddhism the most. Have Buddhists ever went to war? Have they ever had Inquisitions? Have they ever went on Crusades? Have they ever slaughtered hundreds of thousands of people, or tortured them? Have they had institutionalized pedophilia? I don't know. I haven't read enough about them.
I would just as soon believe in what we have discovered as we go along. And leave the fairy tales behind, as I grew up long ago and that is the stuff of children....

#6Sgt., thanks for raising this important question, which many people ask, specifically, are all religions equivalent? I commented on this in a post from January of this year, which I will quote here.
People frequently try to excuse Islam by saying that those who commit murder in its name are radicals who are corrupting the true teachings of that religion. Islam bears no responsibility for the actions of such radicals, claim the apologists.
But what is not even remotely debatable, is that Islam is the only religion that produces such numbers of mass murderers who kill in the name of their religion. It is time for the apologists for Islam to be held to account for this.
I was recently having a discussion on the comments section of this site with a poster who argued that with regard to the subject of abortion, Christianity was comparable to Islam. I responded:
Per the site religioustolerance.org, the total number of murders or attempted murders committed with regard to abortion clinics, from 1989 to 2004, was 24. Compare this to 4,989 killed an injured by radical Islamists in just the past two months.
Compare it to the 142,174 (56,000+ killed, 85,000+ injured) killed or injured by radical Islamists since 9/10/01. (Link to source - and supporting spreadsheet).

The notion that Islam is not unique among religions in the number of such extremists it produces is comforting, but inaccurate. Only Islam produces mass murderers in such numbers. This is a hard truth for which apologists for that religion must be held to account.

#8What we have to come to grips with is that if one's "god" tells him to fly airplanes into buildings, send his children into restaurants with suicide vests, capture innocents and behead them, and all the other evil deeds bellowing the idiotic "Allah Akbar," he may as well say "Satan Akbar," as his god is Satan. What must be understood is that when these Islamic terrorists cite verses from the Quran as the reasons they do these things, the verses are there and they are interpreted correctly.
The Liberal Media that portrays the Major Massacrer as just a nut, and that all religions have nuts, and that it has nothing to do with Islam, just does not understand what the Quran is and what it says. The Quran is the siren call of Evil, for all who are weak or predisposed to do evil. This includes losers in American jails, room temperature IQ folks, easily brainwashed, pliant. History tells us that Muhammod was an extremely depraved violent perverted murderer, and his revelations that became the Quran and Hadiths are either the ravings of a madman, or a communication from Satan, Beelzebub, The Beast, Lucifer. Those who succumb to these Satanic Verses, such as the Fort Hood Major, are but humanoids who have gone to the darkside.

This is precisely what I have been saying for years. I used to be a member of a hardline christian bible thumping church as a result I've read the koran and read various critiques of it and to me its clear that its anything BUT a religion of peace.
Watching them ( the muslim extremist) come on and argue is always amusing. They refuse to answer direct questions, refuse to state fact, argue from thier emotions etc etc. You know whats funny is that all of the arab nations want isreal destroyed but they can't seem to get it done. Why if allah is all powerful and can do anything is this "insult" to thier faith allowed to peresevere and thrive, while most muslims live in abject poverty? Why have they been defeated every time that they have attacked?? If it is because Isreal and the vast zionist conspiracy ( OMG I wanna hurl just typing that load of crap) has made a deal with the devil, are they saying that the devil is more powerful than thier deal with Allah? Oh I can see all the mullahs foaming at the mouth now.
when a muslim attacks a country they view it as muslim forever, and yet when the Jews were attacked and in reprisal took arab land away from them, by the same right of conquest that the arabs claim africa and spain, they cry about it. because after all thats all they can do about it.
Now the reason that they claim they can't beat isreal is because of US support. Well, its not Isreal's fault they were better at currying favor with powerful allies. So they cry about that too. I also love the comment that "princess of the nile" made about "American made f-16's and cluster bombs and all kinds of 'ILLEGAL" weapons." PUUUHHLEASE. How are these wepons wielded by a nation state in defence of thier national security "ILLEGAL" and HAMMAS's use of sucide bombers and rocket attacks against civilian targets "LEGAL". Lets examine the facts, isreal targets HAM-MASS, who deliberatley blends into civilian population KNOWING that the Isrealis are reluctant to cause civillian deaths, and knowing if they DO attack it will make them look bad in the press. Where as the Isrealis who wear uniforms and behave as a proper army should kill civilians as a regrettable means to an end, to wit killing HAM-Mass terrorists. Where as THEY specificaly use weapons deliberatly against civillians in order to spread fear and panic.
