Here's why I think Arnold's initiatives -- most of which I voted for -- didn't pass:
- Information overload. Each of those initiatives required a lot of information to explain. The public was overloaded on elections and international news, and was difficult to reach.
- Those opposing the initiatives did a great job of counter-campaigning.
- Lack of blogger support. For some reason, the California bloggers -- myself included -- didn't mobilize to support these important initiatives. I think we were just overloaded with other news; additionally, Arnold didn't start his major public campaigning until about 7 weeks before the election, giving us little time to mobilize support.
Using initiatives as an end-run around a state government is a relatively unused strategy. Parties have little experience in doing it. Arnold would most likely do things differently, and more successfully, after having had this experience.
