From Huda N. (not her real name) in Egypt:
It seems that the dream of living in a secular democratic country which respects all humans without any discrimination of race, religion or sex is drifting away. The Egyptians are very religious people. They ask bashfully for a secular constitution. They are accused of denying their religion if they ask for a secular constitution. The disappointing point is that the military council has appointed a committee for constitutional changes and asked the committee not to come near the 2nd article (that Islam is the Religion of the State and that Sharia law is the main source for legislation).
The Muslim brotherhood are playing it low for now, but a wolf can’t hide its intentions forever, it would reveal them sooner or later. The Muslim brotherhood has formed a political party and has promised not to nominate for presidency this time, but this doesn’t mean they wouldn’t the next elections. |The godfather of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, Sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawi, is calling for the creation of a renewed Islamic caliphate in all Arab world and in Egypt in particular. He is speaking of a “united Muslim nations.” and for applying the Sharia law in Egypt.
Scanning back a few posts shows that Huda N. (not her real name) in Egypt, has been very concerned about the developments in her nation. But today she sounds a hopeful note. (Emphasis added).
This is not a military coup, it is a transfer of authority to the Army Supreme Council. It would have been a coup if the military was the one that started the revolution (similar to 1952 Egyptian Revolution, where the free officers made a coup on King Farouq), but this revolution is the victory of the will of the people over tyranny. The military authority is just a transitional period and will work as a transitional authority that would restore stability and prepare for the holding of democratic elections.
Many of the well educated Egyptians and the political activists are asking for the formation of a secular government and a secular constitution. They ask for a constitutional democracy. But still many of the fundamentalist Muslims protest a secular constitution as the 2nd article of the old constitution states that "Islam is the Religion of the State, The Arabic language is its official language and that the Islamic Shariaa law is the main reference for legislation". Many think -especially Christians- that it is a racist article that divides Egyptians more than it unites. But the question is: is their number large enough and their voice loud enough to influence the new government and turn this request into an action? Politicians also demanded the freedom of formation of secular, opposition parties and insist if the Muslim brotherhood want to form a party that it would be on political basis and not religious basis. We Christians pray for a secular constitution and a secular government.
From Huda N. in Egypt:
What I can't really believe is that the Americans (especially President Obama) do not understand the grave situation Egypt would suffer from if ever the Muslim Brotherhood takes the power.President Obama only puts democracy in his mind and does not understand that Muslim Brotherhood do not accept the other. Their agenda is a catastrophe by all means. They would wipe all freedoms from Egypt. Christian minority, and women will be mistreated, the peace treaty with Israel will be breached. Their first priority is to fight Israel. All Pharoanic monuments will be eradicated as they are pagan idols.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei called the uprising in Egypt as an Islamic Revolution similar to the Iranian revolution of 1979. He called for an Islamic state to be installed in Egypt with the help of Muslim Brotherhood. What Americans and Europeans do not understand is that you cannot negotiate with them. They intimidate people this is how they gain their power. They are not liked by a lot of Egyptians. They do not believe in the western democracy. President Obama thinks that he can have good relationship with any type of government in Egypt. He is mistaken what he is creating would be another Iran and another Afganistan. A monster that he would not be able to re-leash.
From Huda N. in Egypt:
What Mubarak is saying is that he is an army commander who does not leave his battle and does not abandon the sinking ship. He promised he will not re-nominate nor his son. But people in Tahrir square do not believe him.
What I want to tell you is that Egypt will suffer later economically. We are at the end of the month banks are closed. People were not paid, essential food has become more expensive.
Let me tell you how we spend our evenings. We are back in time we live in the prehistoric times. Men and boys go out at night with canes and sticks block the streets to guard women and children at home. They stay all night in front of the buildings to safeguard streets from the thieves (instead of wild animals). They light bonfires to keep warm. In the morning men sleep and women are unable to go out they only stay at home to cook.
Tomorrow they plan for a big riot, mostly organized by Muslim Brotherhood who want to swim with the tide and take the credit. I hope it passes safely
Update 2-4-2011: The existence of the plans for a riot, reported by Huda, is confirmed:
The protesters have declared this to be “Friday of Departure,” the day when Mubarak must step down if massive demonstrations are to be avoided. The demonstrations are scheduled to begin after Friday Muslim prayers and Christian services, at a time when huge numbers of people pour out of mosques and churches into the streets.
From reader Huda N. (not her real name) in Egypt:
Today is the first day the internet is back, Egypt is in hell now. People are divided into two groups in Cairo (Tahrir Square) fighting took place with stones and some molotov bottles. People who are pro-stability for Mubarek are accusing the others of being traitors and foreign elements responsible of charging the people to destroy the countries safety and security. We Christians are scared of Islamic groups to take the presidency. Some rumors say that Iran and Palestine is behind some of the violence. The jails on the 25th of January were attacked and prisoners were released (some of them were from Hesobo Allah the Lebanese Islamic group) which might support that there are foreign intervention. We are having a curfew from 5 pm to 7 am. we are all tensed we don't know how will it end.
